West Street TavernKarl Roche, proprietor of the West Street Tavern, has applied to the City for permission to construct an open seating area behind the restaurant.  This outdoor feature would be seasonal, open from approximately mid-May through mid-October.  It would seat fifteen diners within a wood lattice enclosure, would not be open after 10 PM, and would not have any recorded music nor live entertainment.

There was hearing before the Newton Board of Aldermen on Tuesday night January 10th to discuss Karl's request; no vote was taken.

If you have any questions or concerns, please either stop by the West Street Tavern, email Karl at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. , or call him at 617-795-0883.

I would like to discuss this at our Neighborhood meeting on January 31st. I knew nothing of this request and I am wondering if the neighbors surrounding the restaurant were made aware of this application to the Aldermen? Will their be another meeting concerning the application? Will the neighbors be notified of this meeting in case they might have some objection to this application?

According to Alderman Scott Lennon, the notifications are sent out by the Clerk's Office a couple of weeks ahead of time to all residents within three-hundred feet of the applicant. There were residents and businesses who came and spoke. There was also a notice posted by the city in front of WST, as required.

The public hearing was held last Tuesday evening at City Hall. There will not be another meeting where the public can speak. There will be another meeting held by the Board's Land Use Committee so it can deliberate on the application, but it has not been determined when that meeting will be.

Interested persons can contact Scott and he can let them know when that would be; they can come and listen to the meeting, as it is open.

If people would like to comment at this time, they can submit their comments in writing or they can call either Jay, Carleton or Scott.

We at the Adams Street Shul (168 Adams Street) did get notice of the hearing, not only from the City but also from the owners of the West Street Tavern.
