The Nonantum Neighborhood Association in connection with the Newton Police department offered informative evening information on how to keep safe during these tough economic times.
Present were the honorable Alderman Scott Lennon, and Alderman Jay Ciccone, Detective Captain Commanding Paul Anastasia, from the Crime Prevention Unit, Attorney Frank Wolpe, and from the Mayor’s office Arron Goldman, neighbors, and business owners.
Here is a synopsis of the meeting:
We all got up-to-date on our website www.nonantum.net and how to utilize its amazing capabilities by the Nonantum Neighborhood Association technical board member Jordan Lee Wagner. To simply reiterate; go to www.nonantum.net register a profile, and post your yard sale, businesses post your sales, read all about what is happening in our neighborhood – now and future events.
We got a brief update by board member Lois Dominique (Village Day Coordinator), on what we are planning for our fun-filled day. Some of which so far includes, face painting, balloon artists, munchies, and fire truck fun – all of which will be FREE! The Village Day committee is still looking for volunteers who might have connections to more fun activities. (To help or offer ideas contact Lois at JaLo’s Re-NEW. The phone number is 617-928-1950).
Then the meeting moved on to more serious matters. The Captain Paul Anastasia gave us some good news and some bad news. Business break-ins were down by 56%, but housebreaks were up by 54%. Causing the Mayor and the Police Department to initiate these neighborhood meetings to help spread helpful information about what we can do as citizens of this great city to protect ourselves and our property. We tend to be a little naive about crime when we live in Newton – one of the safer cities in Massachusetts (and the US for that matter). But, crime is everywhere; and if it happens to you or your neighborhood it becomes very relevant, and personal.
We received handouts with extensive crime prevention information as well as web sites for up to the minute crime information which can be text-ed directly to our phones, (just by registering). Other sites will give us practical ways to burglarproof your home and other free security articles from experts. (See bottom of this article for web sites). Also we were given a “tip line” 617-796-2121. This a recorded message line to anonymously report any suspicious behavior.
The city has 100 less police officers in the last 30 years; and the population of increasing - 4,000 people just since last year.
Basically, this is your city, your village – if you see it – report it.
