 Goal

This project aims to preserve our neighborhood post office from closure.

On November 22nd about 40 Nonantum Residents went to City Hall to protest the closing of our post office. Residents stated their concerns, many answered the questionairres which were sent to residents, and hopefully our concerns will not fall on deaf ears. You can still fill out the questionaire if you have not done so. They have forms at the post office.

Stay tuned for the results and hopefully our post office will be saved!

I did fill out that questionaire. In less than a week I got back a form letter that made it clear they didn't care about the content of my questionaire nor the results of the questionaires generally, and that the decision was already taken.

In today's Tab there is a feature story about the closing of our Post Offices one being Nonantum. In the passage it states:

What can be done to retain these post offices that are scheduled to be closed, Union Representative and General President Paul Kilduff suggests lobbying Barney Frank and Congress to support a recent bill by Congressman Steve Lynch. HR1351 would relieve the Postal Service of it's mandate to prefund employee retirements and immediately allow the USPS to solve its deficit. Senate Bill #2309 will dismantle the Postal Service as we see it today. By 2015, door-to-door delivery to 90 percent of Americans would end. Concerned residents can call in support of HR1351, and urge Senators Kerry and Brown to oppose Senate Bill #2309. For people that care to advocate for our Post Offices to remain open, both the USPS and Congress are willing to hear those voices!

I just received this message from Scott/Jay about Nonantum Post Office closing.

A group of Senators were successful in stopping the closings at least May 15, 2012. Hopefully this delay will halt all closings. This will give Congress and the Senate time to work things out and to provide relief for the Postal Service. Newton Currently has 5 Post Offices slated to close.
